CMO positions in the Emergency Department may be available at any sites in the District including Wollongong, Bulli, Shellharbour and Shoalhaven Hospitals.  Appointment can be full time or part time up until 31 January 2021.

The Wollongong Hospital Emergency Department is a major regional hospital located in the Northern Illawarra, approximately 60 minutes south of Sydney CBD. The Wollongong Hospital is a 500+ bed centre which provides both general and specialty medical and surgical services including adult Intensive Care and Coronary Care units.

Shoalhaven District memorial hospital is situated in Nowra, NSW. It has 180+ beds and provides acute general medical, surgical and paediatric services. It also has a ICU/CCU and obstetric services. The Emergency Departments sees approximately 110 patients a day, although these numbers swell during peak and holiday seasons. There is a wide range of educational and teaching experiences on offer. The patient population is varied and complex, with high numbers of geriatric and ATSI patients.

Shellharbour Hospital (SHH) is a 200 bed regional hospital located in Shellharbour, on the south coast of NSW, 1½ hours drive south of Sydney. This is the most rapidly growing area in the Illawarra and the site of several new suburbs and a new urban retail centre ideally located on a broad coastal plain between beautiful beaches, a rural hinterland and the villages of the southern highlands. 
• Onsite is a major inpatient psychiatric facility with 49 beds.
• Consultants in neurology, renal, endocrinology, rehabilitation, palliative care, geriatrics and surgical sub-specialities provide a consultation service.
• 16 Bed Busy Emergency Department, the source of most admissions, though booked / routine and day stay admissions also.

Bulli Hospital is located 20 minutes North of Wollongong.  Shifts at Bulli mostly involve GP work including 33% Paediatrics and 50% Trauma.  With the Emergency Department closed from 10pm, your responsibility to patients extends to wards, prominently acute geriatrics and geriatric rehab.

These values are the principles which will underpin our day to day work and guide how we interact with our patients and each other.

The CMO under the supervision of specialist staff would be an integral part of the multidisciplinary health care team. CMO would provide supervision to junior doctors and high quality medical services to patients/clients of ISLHD in order to meet their health and wellbeing needs.  

The CMO will participate in a rotating roster of days, evenings, nights and weekends. CMO would also have the opportunity to work at various hospitals across ISLHD.

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with AHPRA.
  2. Minimum of five (5) years postgraduate experience with a significant level of ED experience and advanced life support skills.
  3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  4. Participation in after-hours roster commitments and rotations to other emergency departments in the ISLHD.
  5. Sufficient skills knowledge and experience to practice as a safe and competent Emergency CMO.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work independently and to coordinate services across multiple providers.
  7. Good leadership and teamwork skills.
  8. Excellent time management and organisational skills.
