Legal Counsel, Manager FOI & Privacy

The Legal Counsel, Manager FOI & Privacy role sits within the Corporate Legal Services Division.  This team provides critical legal advice to ensure that WorkSafe discharges its statutory functions in a constructive, accountable, transparent and effective manner.   This position is Geelong-based and will be required to work out of the Geelong interim office until the headquarters at 1 Malop Street are completed in July 2018.

About the role

The Legal Counsel, Manager FOI & Privacy will be responsible for the provision of high quality, client focused FOI and privacy and services to all divisions of WorkSafe. Managing a team and working with a diverse stakeholder group, the position will assist the Director, Corporate Legal in the provision of project work and general legal advice.

Ensuring that all FOI requests are processed in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 1982 and managing WorkSafe’s interactions and submissions to the Office of the FOI Commissioner, this role will also ensure WorkSafe’s Agents have the requisite procedures to manage FOI requests.  This position will also ensure WorkSafe’s compliance to Privacy legislation and provide advice as required.

Skills & Experience

  • Professional legal qualifications, admission to practice as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria and capacity to hold a full practicing certificate
  • Demonstrated experience providing high quality advice on FOI and Privacy
  • Proven team leadership and management skills
  • High level strategic, analytical and critical legal decision making capabilities;
  • High level judgement in identifying and managing the resolution of issues of strategic impact and importance;
  • Proven ability to consult on complex and sensitive issues within critical timeframes and offer constructive solutions;
  • High level communication skills including facilitation of groups and training and the ability to give advice and information succinctly and clearly;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative relationships with key stakeholders;
  • An understanding of the constraints of a statutory, regulatory environment and demonstrated ability to interpret and apply legislative provisions and judicial precedents where necessary;
