General Counsel

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the General Counsel leads our legal team for all legal matters to ensure the organisation is legally protected and its exposure to financial, operational and other risks is appropriately managed.

You will deliver world class service standards in strategy formulation, stakeholder engagement, financial and commercial excellence and people leadership in a dynamic and changing rail network and passenger transport environment.  You will lead the development and implementation of Queensland Rai’s legal framework and legal service delivery across the organisation ensuring compliance with applicable law.  You will also provide advice to the CEO and Board and attend Board meetings as required.

To be successful in this position, you will demonstrate high level strategic and thought leadership experience within a complex operational, customer oriented and major infrastructure projects environment.  You will have knowledge of regulatory requirements governing the rail or similar industry and the relevant laws as they relate to a large, complex, state Government owned organisation.  Your high level of skill will identify risk and promote consistent management and resolution of legal and commercial issues.

A track record of fostering an engaged, safety-focused team that builds relationships, influences, negotiates and sustains productive stakeholder relationships and commercial partnerships is essential.  You will undertake high level, critical analysis of complex information, evaluating enterprise-wide implications and formulating effective responses to critical legal, policy, program, service delivery and stakeholder issues.  You will lead and develop a team of professionals to ensure effective legal matter, contract and legal risk management while improving efficiency through innovation in service delivery.

Formal legal qualifications are essential and you will have relevant experience as a General Counsel including the management of legal service delivery.  You are recognised for your ability to create an organisational culture that engages people, promotes continuous improvement and engenders a robust customer service philosophy and compliance culture. A pragmatic practitioner, you have a track record of effectively influencing behaviours cross-functionally and bring the presence and confidence to support and challenge decision making at Executive and Board level.
