Allied Health Clinician Research Fellow
Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory to inpatient and home and community-based services.

About the Team
Alfred Health’s Allied Health comprises a number of Allied Health disciplines who provide patient centred care across all clinical programs that operate at Alfred Health. The Allied Health team includes clinicians from Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Exercise Physiology, Orthotics and Prosthetics, Orthoptics, Speech Pathology, Social Work, Spiritual Care, Dietetics and Psychology (including Neuropsychology) and are supported by Allied Health Assistants. The Allied Health team now also includes Disability Liaison Officers. The Allied Health team works closely with the Nursing and Medical teams to provide a comprehensive and timely service to both in patients and outpatients.
About the Role
The Allied Health Clinician Research Fellowship is aimed at emerging allied health leaders in research (awarded a PhD qualification within the past 10 years) and seeks to identify the strongest emerging allied health research talent. The focus of the current fellowship round is on funding research efforts to develop and/or scale up evidence-based allied health interventions that keep people out of Hospital. The key research area for this role will be the Evaluating Allied Health-led BED Substitution models of care – Which treatments, when and for whom – cAring for Patients at home (AH BED SWAP) program. This fellowship funding will allow a recent PhD graduate to boost their research career and enhance their ability to attract and secure future funding.
Duties
- Demonstrate broad knowledge within their discipline and detailed knowledge of their specific research area.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of the value of research-practice developments for clinical care outcomes, and ways to mentor / build capacity in research within the clinical setting.
- Foster an organisational culture which promotes quality improvement, service improvement, evidence-based practice and clinical innovation.
- Establishing effective working relationships (both formal and informal) across Allied Health, relevant nursing, medical staff, Alfred Health service providers and community-based services, to promote an integrated approach to clinical research, models of care and service delivery.
- Involvement in continuing education for the profession or the community.
- Demonstrating advanced verbal and written communication skills in all professional domains of practice.
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Undergraduate degree in relevant allied health discipline
- Post graduate research qualification at PhD level in relevant area (up to 10 years post PhD)
- Full Registration held with AHPRA if applicable or eligibility for membership of the relevant professional body
- Sound analytical skills with an ability to communicate complex information clearly both orally and in writing
- High level organisational skills: the ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, initiate and follow-up actions, all with minimal or no supervision
- Experience in qualitative and/or quantitative analysis of data
- Experience in synthesis of findings from published studies (conducting systematic reviews, metaanalyses, scoping reviews)
- Demonstrated ability to conduct research in a clinical setting, including obtaining ethics and governance approvals, data collection and management, and writing for publication.
- A record of publications, conference papers and/or reports, or professional or technical contributions which provide evidence of strong research potential, relative to opportunity
- Working knowledge of the Australian Public Hospital Setting and contemporary challenges for allied health workforce
- Good Clinical Practice training
Desirable
- Experience in the preparation of research proposal submissions to external funding bodies and evidence of success in securing research funding
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially with staff from a diverse range of backgrounds
- Demonstrated ability to plan, develop and implement service delivery initiatives within specialty area of practice
- Demonstrated capacity to inspire, influence and motivate staff, and to contribute to a positive organisational culture
- Recognition as a clinical expert within specialty practice area
