Safe Wayz is NSW Health’s program for response children under 10 years who have displayed problematic or harmful sexual behaviours. We are looking for an Aboriginal clinician or consultant to work as a clinical advisor to join the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network ‘Children and Young People’s Sexual Safety' team (CYPSS) in North Parramatta.  You will work closely with another Safe Wayz clinical advisor in a non-Aboriginal identified position to develop key support, clinical practice, education and training for people working with these children and families.  

You will provide cultural and clinical support to Aboriginal Safe Wayz Clinicians across the state as key focus of this role. You will also work with other members of the CYPSS team to influence how services respond to children under 10 displaying problematic sexual behaviours, and sexual assualt more broadly.  This position provides a unique opportunity to positively influence the NSW Health system to improve outcomes for Aboriginal children and families.
 
The scope of this role is under review and may expand to include support of other workforces such as Aboriginal sexual assault workers. This opportunity provides room for you to bring your skills, passion and cultural lens to help ensure the delivery of culturally safe programs, The intention of these programs is to bring culture into therapeutic processes. This position connects with the Aboriginal clinical advisor for the New Street Services (children and young people 10-17years who have engaged in harmful sexual behaviour), who is also in the CYPSS team.

What you'll be doing
The Aboriginal Clinical Advisor Safe Wayz Program is the central clinical support to the Safe Wayz Program Aboriginal workforce and coordination and communication of the program in its engagement with and provision of services to Aboriginal children, families and communities state-wide. You will be part of a small and supportive team. The position has responsibilities to the Local Health Districts, ECAV, NSW Ministry of Health and SCHN. As Aboriginal Safe Wayz clinicians work closely and alongside Aboriginal sexual assault workers, with the support of the CYPSS team, this role may develop to support both workforces.

The Aboriginal Clinical Advisor Safe Wayz Program provides high level and specialist support to the Senior Clinical Advisor CYPSS in relation to Aboriginal program priorities and program delivery of Safe Wayz services across NSW Health and strategic advice to the NSW Ministry of Health in relation to Safe Wayz and health services for safety of children, primarily safety from domestic and family violence and sexual safety.

The Aboriginal Clinical Advisor Safe Wayz Program works collaboratively with the Clinical Advisor Safe Wayz to jointly support the Safe Wayz Program and establish systems to support and monitor the quality and fidelity to treatment model of Safe Wayz services including cultural care and safety. Specialist advice and support to the Senior Clinical Advisor CYPSS in the clinical support of the Safe Wayz services, on a day to day basis and during absences such as leave.Attends and chairs high level meetings in relation to Safe Wayz with or on behalf of the Senior Clinical Advisor CYPSS to represent the organisation at a strategic level.

Provides high level strategic advice regarding sexual safety of children and young people and domestic and family violence through verbal and written reports including strategic plans, briefing documents, funding applications, academic and practice material, research applications.

  1. Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by section 14(d) of the Anti- Discrimination Act 1997.
  2. High level of knowledge of Aboriginal disadvantage and impacts on child safety, families and PHSB of children who are under the age of criminal responsibility.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work in culturally safe ways particularly in relation to Aboriginal workforce, children, families.
  4. Demonstrated expertise in child protection policy and procedure as it relates to domestic and family violence, PHSB and sexual abuse; understanding of the legislative context for child protection and intent of the reforms arising from various commissions of enquiry related to problematic and harmful sexual behaviour of children and how this relates to NSW Health policy and service provision.
  5. Experience in planning, management and leadership of health services or therapeutic teams and providing cultural supervision and training to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal clinicians or related workforce.
  6. Experience in providing high level strategic advice to health services, related entities and/or government regarding the safety of children, operation of therapeutic services demonstrating specialist knowledge of subject content and delivering solutions, strategic plans and options for health services.
  7. Experience working with children who have experienced trauma including therapeutic intervention to their families, carers and other agencies involved in their care
  8. A degree in a relevant field (Psychology, Social Work, Counselling), or equivalent work experience, or a combination of study and work experience
