The Victorian Government has announced a restructuring of the state’s public service, which Premier Denis Napthine says will allow for a greater focus on jobs and investment return while delivering frontline services more efficiently.

“We need our public service to offer a proactive ‘open for business’ culture across the whole of government,” Dr Napthine said.

“We must cut red tape, minimise bureaucratic bottlenecks and build partnerships that will bring business and jobs to the state.

“The arrangements I am announcing today will sharpen the focus of the public service on securing investment and jobs, delivering responsible financial management, and providing better frontline services to all Victorians."

Dr Napthine announced the following changes to the Victorian Public Service

  • Urban and transport planning to be integrated into local infrastructure and services
  • Land and water management to be brought under the Department of Primary Industries
  • Aboriginal and Veterans Affairs to be brought under the Department of the Premier and Cabinet

Dr Napthine said the restructuring of the public service would include a dedicated division within the new Department of State Development, Business and Innovation focused on facilitating significant projects which require a whole-of-government approach.

“The Department will cut red tape and expedite project approvals across government in order to bring major projects such as E-Gate and Fishermans Bend to market,” Dr Napthine said.
