An inquiry will be held after the controversial hiring of a top cop's media chief in NSW.

NSW Premier Chris Minns has declared an official review into the payouts given to public servants upon termination, in light of revelations that nearly $700,000 has been allocated to three former NSW Police chief media advisers over the past two years.

Police Commissioner Karen Webb has not disclosed the exact sum granted to Steve Jackson following the cessation of his contract last month, despite ongoing scrutiny over the sizable sums of taxpayer money being funnelled as “termination payments”.

In the wake of these payouts, Premier Minns said it is important to scrutinise “large amounts of money that are being handed to senior executives for not doing a job”.

Further details revealed by NSW Police indicate that the total payout sum of $687,613 was in compliance with existing legislation, which mandates up to 38 weeks of pay for employees dismissed prior to their contract's end.

NSW Police has cited the need for roles to be “free from external distractions and ongoing media attention”.
