Understanding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Local Government

Following the recent Senate inquiry on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and its recommendations for councils, it is imperative that local governments learn how they can impact the goals in order to create local action.

Local governments are local leaders, policy makers, catalysts of change and the level of government best-placed to link the global goals with local communities.

Learn how the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be applied to the daily work of local and regional governments to make communities healthier, more sustainable, liveable and inclusive places to live.

This highly interactive workshop will inspire and motivate your team to be ‘goal keepers’ and help council to understand its role and strategic priorities in delivering the global goals.

Workshop outline:

  • Introduction to the Sustainable Development Goals
  • Understand each goal, its indicators and how Australia is performing
  • Be inspired by Guest Speaker in a live case study with Amber Stewart, Community Planner from City of Newcastle. Amber will share their journey with the SDGs, from integrating them into their Community Strategic Plan, to engaging internal and external stakeholders.
  • Learn how to map SDGs to your current Community Strategic plan and use them to build future strategy
  • Learn how to create an integrated response to the SDGs across your council working with a system view
  • Hear case studies on how local governments are encouraging engagement with the SDGs
  • Understand how to communicate with, and engage stakeholders using the goals
  • Learn about a new online assessment and SDG Impact Plan that can help you take the next steps on your SDG journey.

You will also receive an eBook packed full of resources following the workshop.

“It was refreshing to meet other local government representatives interested in the role of councils in implementing the SDGs.  My key takeaway from the day is that the SDGs allow local government to tackle silo thinking and develop an integrated framework for the work they do. I highly recommend this workshop for anyone interested in furthering their understanding of the SDGs and how to implement them”.

Chris Harle, Lake Macquarie Council, NSW.
