Victoria has set an offshore wind target of 9GW.

Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andrews says a “new and even more ambitious” renewable energy goal for the state will include plans to accelerate the rollout of offshore wind energy generation projects.

“For the first time anywhere in Australia, we will set a minimum target for offshore wind power generation,” Mr Andrews said last Friday.

“By 2032, Victoria will reach a massive 2GW of offshore wind energy production, that’s the equivalent of 20 per cent of Victoria’s energy needs today, [and] set a target of 4GW by 2035 and, finally, 9GW by 2040 – targets, ladies and gentlemen, that we will meet and we will exceed.”

Victoria already has a legislated target for a 50 per cent renewable energy powered electricity grid by 2030.

It is also the first state in Australia to have an offshore wind project proposed off its coast - with the 2.2GW Star of the South reportedly on track to be the first offshore wind farm in Australia.

“[This] is the clearest and best signal that we can send to investors – to those who will build and operate and those who want to invest in this resource,” Mr Andrews said.

“It’s more than a signal, though, it’s a message from a government with a proven track record of getting things done. And a government not prepared to simply say, well that’s a matter for the Feds, who we know will do precious little about it.”
