The South Australian Public Sector’s new Code of Ethics has come into force this week.

Commissioner for Public Sector Employment, Erma Ranieri, says the document is about unifying workers into a single culture of common values and standards.

The government says it is the responsibility of each person employed in the public sector to familiarise themselves with the Code and ensure that they follow it.

The Code is divided into four sections:

  • Application of the Code, including the roles of chief executives and other organisational leaders
  • Four Foundations of public service: Democracy, Impartiality, Accountability, and Diversity
  • The Public Sector Values
  • The Professional Conduct Standards

The Code is allegedly based on the notion that creativity, mature judgement, and common sense are more valuable than rigid rules.
