Queensland’s independent regulatory, the Queensland competition Authority (QCA), has announced the final price rise determination for general household electricity will be set at 22.6 per cent.

State Treasurer, Tim Nicholls, said that the decision was yet another blow for consumers, but the QCA had ‘little room to move’, with network costs and green schemes all putting upward pressure on suppliers.

“Network costs controlled by the Australian Energy Regulator account for almost 47 per cent of this increase,” Mr Nicholls said.

State Energy Minister, Mark McArdle, wasted little time in accusing the Federal Government’s carbon tax and green schemes of being the ‘real drivers’ of the increases.

“If the Federal Labor Government scrapped the carbon tax and the rest of the Labor green schemes, Queenslanders would have savings of about 15 per cent on their bills,” Mr McArdle said.
