NSW paramedics have secured a major pay rise after a lengthy dispute.

A bitter dispute, which lasted over eight months, stemmed from paramedics' claims of lower salaries compared to their counterparts in the ACT, Queensland, and Victoria.

After intensive negotiations, the Health Services Union (HSU) and the NSW government reached an agreement that will see paramedics receive an average pay rise of 25 per cent over a four-year period.

The increases will range from 11 per cent to 29 per cent, depending on the paramedics' experience levels.

Starting from the beginning of next year, the base salary for year-six paramedics will increase from $79,737 to $88,082, marking a more than 10 per cent boost.

The total cost of the agreement is estimated at approximately $500 million, with some funding coming from savings within the health portfolio.

To avoid a potential mass walkout of paramedics who threatened not to renew their professional registrations from January 1, 2024, both parties sought a resolution through the industrial relations commission.

This move was prompted by concerns that such a walkout could severely disrupt emergency services during the New Year's celebrations.

The pay rises will be implemented in phases starting from January 1, 2024, and extending until July 2026.
