McGowan finds new jobs
Former WA premier Mark McGowan has made a very soft landing since leaving the state’s top job.
McGowan has assumed a significant role at Bondi Partners, the consultancy firm founded by former Australian Treasurer Joe Hockey, as part of his new portfolio of four private sector positions.
McGowan, who resigned from state politics due to exhaustion five months ago, will reportedly provide investment and strategic counsel at Bondi Partners, which focuses on enhancing trade and business connections between Australia and the United States.
In addition to this role, McGowan has secured positions at two prominent mining companies, Mineral Resources and BHP.
At Mineral Resources, he serves as a part-time strategic advisor, leveraging his extensive experience to benefit the company. He is also set to undertake a consulting role with BHP in the near future.
McGowan is also expected to take on an advisory role at APM Human Services International, a company offering employment assistance and health services.
His appointment to Bondi Partners has drawn criticism from Center for Public Integrity Director Geoffrey Watson, who believes that former politicians should face a five-year waiting period before engaging in lobbying activities, citing potential conflicts of interest.
McGowan announced his resignation in May, stating that the relentless pressures of political life had taken a toll on him.
During his tenure as Premier, he led Western Australia Labor to two resounding election victories in 2017 and 2021, securing a total of 53 out of 59 lower house seats in the latter election.
He also assumed the role of the state's treasurer following the 2021 election.
