A new law has been passed in Queensland to protect public servants from being sued.

The Queensland Government announced the new protections this week, saying they cover all government employees including police officers.

The changes mean action will have to be taken against the State of Queensland, instead of the individual responsible.

The new legislation does include a stipulation allowing the Government to recover its money if a staff member fails to act in good faith, or commits an act of gross negligence.

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman says the amended laws will bring a sense of certainty and solidarity.

“It is about letting Queensland's public servants know, letting our police, our doctors and nurses, our staff on the front desks of client service centres know, that they will be supported in performing their roles,” he said.
