Reports say hackers breached the Queensland Transport Department's security network last year.

A Right to Information request by the ABC has revealed that the hackers attempted to steal information from staff members from other sections of government in December last year.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has a stash of information including names, addresses and dates of birth, but it insists there is only a low risk that sensitive information was stolen.

The intruders reportedly accessed two official email accounts before sending out emails to other government departments in an attempt to ‘phish’ more access.

A spokesperson said the breach was shut down within five hours.

“The identified IP addresses were blocked and passwords of two compromised accounts were changed,” the department says.

“All internal staff and threat intelligence partners were contacted and asked to block the fake website referred to in the phishing email.

“A review of both TMR accounts confirmed no sensitive information was released and there was a low risk any data was released.”

While this one got through, the department effectively blocked about 996,000 malicious attacks on the network over the past year and discovered 1,382 emails containing viruses.
