Senior British corrections specialist, Mr Brian Edwards OBE, has been appointed as Director, Change Management for the Tasmania Prison Service.

Announcing the appointment, the Minister for Corrections and Consumer Protection, Nick McKim, said the establishment of this position for a two year period was the centrepiece of last year’s report by Mick Palmer AO APM into the Risdon Prison Complex.

“I have been a strong advocate for corrections reform and we need to put resources into it, even in a time of budgetary stress.

“Mr Edwards’ appointment is a major step forward in the process Mick Palmer identified for progressing operational and cultural reform.

“Mr Edwards has served Her Majesty’s Prison Service in the United Kingdom for 34 years, including almost 15 years in senior operational roles such as Senior Governor at Glen Parva Young Offenders Centre, Stocken Prison and Whitemoor High Security Prison.

“Since 2006 Mr Edwards has been undertaking consultancy work in the corrections environment, predominantly in the area of change management using the skills he developed as a Prison Governor.

“This combination of experience gives him a strong foundation to work with Tasmania Prison Service management and staff and other stakeholders to improve the performance of the system as a whole.
