About the opportunity
The Safety Advisor is a pivotal role in ensuring the NSW SES maintains and continually improves its safety culture. This role will prepare and communicate safety messaging, partake in safety solutions across all the emergency service activities our members participate in, and will play a key role in implementing safety strategies, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and codes of practice.
Working closely with leaders and volunteers, the Safety Advisor will also be responsible for assisting with identifying and mitigating safety risks and hazards, including analysing and reporting on safety data to support a safe environment for members of the NSW SES.
During operational activity, this role will also play a significant role in being a key stakeholder in the safety of our volunteers when they are responding to emergencies – this can include weekend and after hours work during heightened operational activity.
This role is flexible with hybrid working arrangements with a minimum of 3 days at the HQs office in Wollongong.

About you
To be successful in this role you will have the following:
- Diploma of Work Health and Safety (or equivalent).
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in work health and safety including reviewing and analysing safety management system data, supporting reporting systems, advising leadership in safety across of several forums with leaders and workers, understanding and interpreting legislative requirements and embedding policies and procedures regarding work health and safety.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of work health and safety legislation.
- Thorough knowledge of AIIMS principles and processes, and/or willingness to obtain competence within 12 months.
- Excellent communication skills and proficiency in building and maintaining relationships with stakeholder, internal and external.
- Valid Driver’s License’s and/or the ability to travel to SES unit locations.

Targeted Questions
- You need to develop an agency Work Health and Safety (WHS) risk register that includes psychosocial risks. Please describe the steps you would take to identify, assess, and document these risks across the agency. Provide a detailed example of a specific psychosocial risk you might include in the risk register and explain how you would ensure it is managed effectively within the agency.
- In this role, you will need to work with a variety of stakeholders across the agency, some of whom may have differing, or challenging perspectives on WHS initiatives. Describe how you would engage these stakeholders and build relationships to gain support for a key WHS project. Please provide an example of a WHS initiative you implemented that required consulting with and addressing concerns from diverse stakeholders.
