The Staff Specialist Rheumatologist role is to provide expert medical assessment and management of patients with musculoskeletal, rheumatologic and autoimmune diseases.

The position is primarily based at the Wollongong Hospital and provides advice district-wide. The SS Rheumatologist will provide inpatient care and consultation service, with the opportunity for outpatient clinics, for patients with the full range of musculoskeletal and autoimmune diseases, including arthritis, connective tissue disease, spinal and soft tissue disorders, certain metabolic bone disorders including osteoporosis, and chronic musculoskeletal pain syndromes.

The Department operates in a University teaching Hospital and the role includes the supervision of the training of an Accredited Advanced Trainee in Rheumatology with the RACP. In addition it is supported by Basic Physician Trainees and Junior Medical Officers of General Medicine on a rotational basis. Opportunities for research are available in a research-active environment in collaboration with ISLHD Research Central, the University of Wollongong, the Department of General Medicine at TWH and other stakeholders.

The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) has responsibility for health services in the Illawarra Shoalhaven region – a catchment area extending along the coastline from Helensburgh in the north to North Durras in the south with over 400,000 residents. This catchment covers four Local Government Areas (LGAs): Wollongong, Kiama, Shellharbour and Shoalhaven. ISLHD operates eight hospital sites in Coledale, Bulli, Wollongong, Port Kembla, Shellharbour, Berry, Shoalhaven and Milton Ulladulla, and community health services operating from approximately 58 locations across the region. Wollongong Hospital is the largest of Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District’s eight hospitals, treating more than 48,000 patients annually. It is the region’s tertiary referral hospital servicing a population of more than 400,000 people. The Wollongong Hospital is a 500+ bed centre which provides both general and specialty medical and surgical services including adult intensive care and coronary care units.

An academic suite at Wollongong Hospital supports both the Graduate School of Medicine and School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Wollongong. As such there are teaching and research opportunities through the UOW Graduate School of Medicine.

Successful applicants to the role must provide certified documentation of vaccination history and pathology as part of their recruitment documentation. The applicant must be certified as compliant with Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases before employment can commence.

Selection Criteria

  1. Specialist registration or eligible for specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Physicians (FRACP) and/or equivalent specialist recognition with accredited training in Rheumatology.
  2. Clinical experience in Rheumatology with the ability to develop and maintain networks.
  3. Demonstrated experience in medical education at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level, and dedication in education of non-medical staff of the hospital.
  4. Commitment to evidence based best practice and to continued personal and professional development
  5. Demonstrated experience in and commitment to research relevant to the role and needs of the Department.
  6. Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality services, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality improvement activities relevant to the specialty.
  7. Demonstrate the skills and attitudes appropriate as a Senior Medical Practitioner including modelling a high standard of professional behaviour to junior medical staff.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team across multiple sites.
