About the role

As a WorkSafe Inspector, you will have a vital role in ensuring that workplaces meet their health and safety obligations. You will assist and advise employers, supervisors and workers on how to make workplaces safe and undertake enforcement action to ensure compliance with health and safety laws. You will also assist Health and Safety Representatives in their role of representing workers on Occupational Health and Safety issues.

You will spend a large part of your time inspecting workplaces in the mining, quarrying and minerals exploration industries across Victoria.  As a Technical Inspector you will conduct inspections in accordance with oversight plans and participate in annual verification inspections. During an inspection, you will gauge the level of compliance with legislative requirements and take appropriate action, which may range from the provision of information to the imposing of enforcement measures.

• You will assess, monitor and enforce compliance to OH&S legislation in the workplace, in accordance with WorkSafe policy and procedure
• You will review incidents, report and determine next steps, including making recommendations for further investigation.
• You will complete all reports and administrative requirements of field officers in an accurate and timely manner, and in accordance with required timeframes.
• You will identify opportunities, make recommendations and implement improvements to processes, systems and work practices.

About you

As a Technical Inspector (Earth Resources) you will have experience in a high-risk industry relevant to the earth resources industry such as extractive industries (mines or quarries), aviation, major hazard facilities or petroleum.  Working knowledge of the Earth Resources industry, including national/industry standards and compliance codes. Your negotiation and interpersonal skills are excellent as stakeholder engagement is fundamental within the role. You will also possess:

• Strong communication capability, working in a team and with various stakeholders
• Understanding of work equipment, work practices and operating procedures
• Practical experience in implementing OH&S legislation
• Sound knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety and Workers Compensation legislation in Victoria
• Excellent time management, prioritisation and organisational skills
• Hold a current Victorian Driver’s Licence as travel throughout the state will be required.

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualifications in Occupational Health and Safety/Workers Compensation is desirable not mandatory
• Qualifications relevant to the extractives sector is desirable not mandatory

This role can be physically demanding, so we need to ensure you can perform the inherent requirements of the position safely without putting yourself or others at risk. As an applicant, WorkSafe will require that you undergo a pre-employment medical examination by an external GP who will assess your current health as well as your medical and surgical history. Applicants are also required to meet the standards of medical fitness for this role and complete alcohol and drug screening. 

Successful applicants will be required to complete a 13 week paid induction program and will also be enrolled to complete a Diploma of Government.
