About the role

Tasmania’s Inland Fisheries Service (IFS) is seeking a Commercial Fisheries Compliance Officer to join a small dynamic team that prides itself on being results focussed.

This is a key new permanent position with the ability to work from anywhere in the state once the successful candidate is well established in the role. Field work is a significant part of this role, and you’ll see some unique and beautiful parts of Tasmania while visiting sites across the state. Some attendance in New Norfolk for training and team meetings will be required and you’ll have access to a pool car when required.   

You’ll play a leading role in the setting up of systems, processes, and programs for the compliance team to work toward completing the commercial components of the compliance annual plan. Some of the key duties include:

  • Liaise with members of community groups, commercial fishers, and government agencies.
  • Prepare offence briefs and reports.
  • Participate in fisheries intelligence operations and prosecutions.
  • Collect and collate evidence and represent IFS in court.
  • Participate in management, research, and conservation programs.

Opportunities will exist for exciting future work assisting other functions of the IFS such as fish transfers, recreational angler checks, and fisheries performance assessments.

Our ideal candidate

  • Knowledge and understanding of Commercial Fisheries management principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated experience in audit and compliance procedures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to make informed decisions and recommendations.
  • Self-motivated and has lateral thinking, system development, and problem-solving skills.
