Wivenhoe engineers step down as pressure builds
Seqwater has advised the Queensland Department of Environment and Resource Management that two of its senior flood engineers involved in the operations of the Wivenhoe Dam during the 2011 flood.
Seqwater advised on Friday that one of the engineers is unable to act in the role and further Seqwater have today provided advice to DERM that the second engineer has advised he is also unable to act in the role.
Senior flood engineers from Seqwater have faced ongoing criticism of the handling of dam levels leading up to the flooding of Brisbane. The flood engineers have been accused of not following the dam’s operational manual as well as providing misleading information to the inquiry to cover their mistakes.
The announcement comes after the Queensland Government faces a potential class action of up to $1 billion dollars in compensation costs for the 2011 flooding.
Australia's largest litigation funder IMF has confirmed that it will widen its own investigations into the causes of the January 2011 flood event in South East Queensland.
Announcing the company's plans today in Brisbane John Walker, IMF executive director said further investigations were now warranted and that Maurice Blackburn lawyers would be working with IMF on the case.
"The current inquiry paid for by the State of Queensland is not designed to identify all the detail about what the Wivenhoe Dam operators ought to have done throughout the January 2011 flood event, whether their conduct breached any legals standard and if so, who downstream from the dam suffered compensable loss," said Mr Walker.
