The WA Government claims it has more than halved the amount of unused state government office space.

Finance Minister Simon O’Brien said that in 2008, the percentage of vacant Government office space was 0.87 per cent, and that is now between 0.18 per cent and 0.37 per cent.

“We have achieved this through better long term planning. This planning is helping us getting closer to our goal of saving $25million per year on Government accommodation.”

Key planks of the office master planning include:

  • Reducing occupancy density from 19 to 15 square metres per employee
  • The consolidation of Government accommodation into fewer buildings. 5,000 public servants from 17 locations and 22 agencies have been relocated under the master plan into Government-owned and long-term lease accommodation
  • Leveraging Government’s buying power to negotiate better rental rates.
