Top cop faces leak charge
A senior Victorian policeman faces charges of leaking information this week.
Commander Stuart Bateson – who is responsible for putting some of the state's most notorious criminals behind bars - is due to face allegations of disclosing a restricted matter.
Mr Bateson is expected to fight the three charges resulting from an IBAC investigation.
He is suspended for now, but has the backing of the police force, including Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton.
“He's put his life in danger on many occasions on behalf of the community and has tackled some very, very serious criminals in doing his work,” Mr Ashton said.
Mr Bateson has served as a detective in organised crime, homicide and counter-terrorism units, including as a member of the high-profile Purana Taskforce.
Mr Bateson has given evidence at an ongoing inquiry into police use of informers, confirming he had played a role in encouraging witnesses to give evidence that brought down murdered gangland criminal Carl Williams and his illegal empire.
