Territory workers holding on for one per cent
Public sector workers in the Northern Territory have voted against a recent wage offer, calling for an extra one per cent increase.
The Territory Government has tabled an offer to about 10,000 public sector workers, promising a 3 per cent wage increase. That is not enough for NT public servants though, with Unions pushing for a 4 per cent raise.
A ballot of all staff employed by the Territory Government saw workers vote to reject the three per cent offer.
Public Employment commissioner Ken Simpson says parties will now sit for more negotiations, but it may not lead to the ideal outcome workers are pushing for.
“I will need to have a conversation with the Government early next week around their position... my understanding is that their attitude won't be changing,” Mr Simpson said
“I will need to confirm that next week and we will resume discussions with the unions.”
Transport Workers Union spokesperson ray Wyatt says he wants a better deal for bus drivers and anyone else employed in NT’s public services.
“They should get involved, they should understand what the negotiations are about,” he said.
“I encourage people to get active in their workplace.”
