Still no solid ground for big road build
The Victorian Government has had to defend the meagre amount of information it has put out about a multi-billion dollar road building plan.
The Government has released its most solid justification for the $8 billion East West Link in the form of a traffic survey.
There are now claims that the company contracted to perform the study is not actually qualified to provide such forecasts.
The survey put together by TraffixGroup showed the East-West Link would cut 30 minutes off average travel times.
But TraffixGroup holds no accreditation from VicRoads to perform proper traffic projections or modelling.
Transport Minister Terry Mulder has had to defend the documents, saying the company had produced a traffic ‘survey’, not modelling or forecasting.
“They did this survey, tracking 400 vehicles from the Chandler Highway over to Brunswick Road, worked out what the travel times were, worked out what the travel times were going through the East West Link tunnel and they came up with the figures they've provided to the Linking Melbourne Authority as to time savings,” Mr Mulder told reporters this week.
“This is not a traffic modelling exercise.”
But even without any official modelling, Mr Mulder says he thinks benefits of the East West Link are clear.
“Getting from one end of the East West Link to the other end of the East West Link is still a seven-to-eight-minute time travel,” he said.
“That's been established well and truly.”
