The Victorian government has decided to abandon its plans for mass redundancies targeting 4,000 state public servants.

The government has reportedly agreed to prioritise transfers and redeployments within existing enterprise bargaining provisions, following intense pressure from the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU).

Terminating employment is now being considered only as a last resort, according to reports

The government's new stance is that when an individual's role is deemed surplus, every effort should be made to facilitate redeployment, whenever feasible, aligning with their industrial relations policies.

This change marks a significant victory for the state public service union, which staunchly opposed unilateral targeted layoffs by the government, especially amid an ongoing recruitment crisis.

The CPSU was adamant that such tactics aimed at bolstering future budgets by shifting contingent liabilities were unacceptable.
