The South Australian Government has announced it will get an Independent Commissioner Against Corruption (ICAC) by the middle of next year after the State Opposition lent its support to the Bill’s passage earlier this week.

State Premier, Jay Weatherill, welcomed the passing of the ICAC Bill, which he described as an ‘historic moment’.

“We made a commitment to South Australians in 2010 that we would get an ICAC and we have now delivered this,” Mr Weatherill said.

“I am very pleased that the Liberals finally stopped playing politics and have supported the ICAC.”

Mr Weatherill said that work will now begin on finding a Commissioner to run the ICAC.

Attorney General John Rau said that he has already asked his Department to prepare advertisements for the position of Independent Commissioner.

“I want to advertise as soon as possible to get the best possible Commissioner in the job,” Mr Rau said.

The State Government announced that the ICAC would be staffed by two Government, two Opposition and two Independent members to ensure its independence.
