NT launches ambulance review
The NT Government has announced a review of ambulance services.
The Territory has announced a new initiative aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery and emergency response times.
The review, starting on 1 July 2024, will involve an independent assessment of the current ambulance service model to identify areas for improvement.
In the NT, St John Ambulance has the contract for ambulance services, instead of having them be government-run.
Chief Minister Eva Lawler says the review will boost locals’ wellbeing.
“Territorians deserve the best quality health care and that’s why we are reviewing ambulance services in the Territory,” she said.
“St John ambulance currently provide a very important service and we want to make sure that we have the best model for Territorians into the future.”
Recommendations from the review are expected to be submitted to the Northern Territory Government by the end of the year.
The government allocates $45.9 million annually to St John Ambulance.
In response to increased demand pressures, an additional $7.8 million has been provided to ensure the continuation of life-saving services.
This additional funding will be subject to an independent audit of St John's finances.
Additionally, the 2024 Budget includes a $1.5 million investment for planning and designing a new Greater Darwin ambulance station. This new facility will serve as a central hub, supporting existing stations at Casuarina, Parap, and Palmerston.
