Millions flow to first REZ
Queensland's first Renewable Energy Zone is moving ahead, with $25.8 million in investments.
The Queensland Government has announced investments in Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) in Callide, Central Queensland.
According to the REZ Readiness Assessment, which forms part of a legislated framework under the Energy (Renewable Transformation and Jobs) Act 2024, local communities largely support the transition to renewable energy.
However, they emphasise the need for careful planning to ensure that the REZ maintains a stable and affordable energy supply while protecting local jobs and industries.
In response to the community’s feedback, the government says it is expanding the Gas Fields Commission’s role to create Coexistence Queensland, a body that will manage the relationship between agriculture, resources, and renewable energy sectors.
Energy Minister Mick de Brenni says that the government is committed to delivering clean energy in a way that secures jobs for Queenslanders.
Several key initiatives have been outlined to support the Callide REZ, including:
-
$5 million for the Callide REZ Community Legacy Fund
-
$4.4 million to establish a Future Hub Training Facility and Visitor Centre
-
$1 million for biodiversity mapping
-
$1.4 million for workforce planning, particularly focused on Biloela
Powerlink Queensland has been selected as the delivery body for the REZ.
It will oversee the development and implementation of REZ management plans, which will define the zone’s transmission infrastructure and capacity, and ensure all relevant stakeholders are engaged in decision-making.
Banana Shire Mayor Nev Ferrier has expressed optimism about the project, saying that while the region’s coal reserves had historically driven the local economy, it is time to embrace renewable energy as part of a sustainable future.
The Callide REZ is one of 12 proposed zones across Queensland, with additional assessments scheduled for late 2024 and 2025.
As planning continues, a local reference group will be established to ensure diverse community representation in decision-making processes related to the REZ.
The group is set to provide input on the development and potential declaration of the Callide REZ later this year.
