Energy upgrades are cutting power bills for over 1,000 NSW social housing tenants.

Since January, the Commonwealth and NSW governments have supported the $175 million Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative (SHEPI), which aims to improve energy efficiency, affordability, and sustainability in social housing across the state. 

The initiative targets 24,000 properties by June 2027.

The upgrades include heat pump hot water systems, solar-sharing systems, ceiling insulation, electric stoves, and split-system air conditioners. 

So far, installations have taken place in Regional NSW and Western Sydney, benefiting government-managed homes and properties overseen by Aboriginal community housing providers.

“The Albanese Government is driving down energy bills with social housing upgrades to help bring cost of living relief to some 24,000 NSW homes,” said Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen. 

Josh Wilson, Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy, described the initiative as a “real difference” for social housing tenants, who are among the least able to afford such upgrades.
