Border Force fails on asbestos arrival
Asbestos is still being used in building products on Australian sites, and experts want a serious response.
The Asbestos Diseases Foundation of Australia (ADFA) wants the Federal Government so set up a strict new monitoring process for asbestos in building materials.
It comes after the deadly substance was found in roof panels used at the Perth Children's Hospital site.
The roof panels were purchased from Chinese company Yuanda, which also supplied asbestos-tainted gaskets used in a new government tower in Brisbane.
The agency responsible for stopping asbestos at the border – the Australian Border Force - says it only tests for the deadly substance in a fraction of shipments each year.
ADFA president Barry Robson said greater monitoring is needed immediately.
“What price is a life? The Federal Government, especially the border control people should be down on the waterfront inspecting all of these products coming in to make sure that they're not used in the construction industry in Australia,” he said.
The Australian Border Force (ABF) has defended its efforts saying it has found asbestos 17 times since 2013.
With more than one case of asbestos on a building site emerging within a week, many are concerned that ABF’s 17 matches did not stop the potential threat.
Border Protection Minister Peter Dutton says the department will not do anything more until an independent review ordered in February is complete.
