The Queensland Government has announced major power upgrades, worth over $130 million, to nine significant projects to boost electricity supplies in and around Redcliffe, Caboolture, Morayfield, Deception Bay, North Lakes, Kallangur, Petrie, Narangba and Burpengary.

The State Government anticipates the upgrades will benefit 160,000 homes and businesses in Brisbane’s northern gateway suburbs.

“These projects are designed to meet the growing demand for electricity in the region which has been rising at levels more than twice the national average in recent years and is forecast to continue to rise in the years ahead,” State Energy Minister Stephen Robertson said.

“This is one of the largest integrated upgrades to power supplies in south east Queensland.”

The major components of the northern gateway project are:

  • a duplication of the sub-transmission powerline between Brendale and Rothwell ($40 million)
  •  the construction of a new electricity bulk supply substation at Griffin ($35 million)
  •  new zone substations at Burpengary ($13.4 million), Whiteside ($13 million) and Wamuran ($6.5 million)
  •  upgrading the existing substations or electricity supplies at Mango Hill ($5.6 million), Hays Inlet ($2 million), Morayfield ($5 million) and between Brendale and Lawnton substations ($10 million).
