Tasmania’s treasurer says job will be lost if the public sector rejects the latest pay deal.

Treasurer Peter Gutwein has made what he calls a “fair and affordable” offer of a 2 per cent a year pay rise with an additional 20 days of leave for victims of family violence.

The public sector union wants a 2.5 per cent pay rise in December, 2.75 next year, and 3 per cent in 2018.

The Treasurer says the union’s plan would cost an extra $180 million, a figure that is “unaffordable without significant job losses”.

“My message to the public sector is this is a good deal,” Mr Gutwein told Parliament.

“No delays, a real wage increase above inflation, no loss of the current terms and conditions ... and importantly it's a deal the state can afford.”

The Community and Public Sector Union says the Government is trying to truncate negotiations, and is ignoring important matters of conditions.

Public sector workers are meeting in late October to vote on the Government's offer.

The Government cut 1,200 public service positions just two years ago, after a bid to freeze wages failed.
