South Australia’s youngest bushfire victims will receive counselling and a backpack of supplies when they return to school next week.

The state government has announced new recovery measures including the waiving of school fees for 2020 for any families affected by the fires.

“Many families in the Adelaide Hills and on Kangaroo Island have lost everything in the recent bushfires and with school going back next week, these backpacks will mean children have what they need to start the school year,” Human Services Minister Michelle Lensink.

The state is also giving out free school uniforms and backpacks filled with stationery, books, a lunchbox and a drink bottle.

Meanwhile, principals have been given more resources and training materials to help school staff identify and support students experiencing trauma.

Specialist teams in psychology, wellbeing and social work will be made accessible to schools, staff and students in need.
