MPs and public sector executives in the Northern Territory are now under a pay freeze.

The NT Government wants to save $25 million over the next three years, and has introduced 70 new measures to return the budget to surplus by 2027/28, including the pay freeze.

Treasurer Nicole Manison said it was a tough but necessary decision after the government was hit by a $500 million cut to GST returns.

She says the pay freeze will not impact on frontline workers including teachers, nurses and police.

“We are ensuring that it is the politicians and executives who do the heavy lifting to fix the budget,” she said.
