Applications are sought from suitably qualified post graduate fellows for a role in our Emergency Department at John Hunter Hospital. This role is to provide contemporary comprehensive specialist services for optimal patient outcomes in the Emergency Department.

This position provides an opportunity to work for the largest local health district in NSW at a Level 6, tertiary referral, major trauma and teaching hospital - serving a population of 900,000+ across the Hunter, New England and Lower Mid North Coast areas. John Hunter Hospital is the largest hospital in Hunter New England Local Health District with approximately 650 beds and growing and we have strong, innovative connections with Hunter Medical Research Institute and University of Newcastle. 

John Hunter Hospital contains the only trauma centre in New South Wales outside the Sydney Metropolitan Area, and has the busiest emergency department in the state. We provide primary and tertiary trauma services to the people of the Hunter Valley and tertiary trauma services to the people of the Central Coast, New England, and Mid North Coast regions of New South Wales. Our Department has 36 months of ACEM accredited training time and 18 months for PEM training.

With support from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and NSW Ambulance, the hospital provides a retrieval service for critically ill patients from the Hunter and North Coast.

Requirements of the role: 

  • Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM) and/or equivalent specialist recognition.  Or eligible for Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM) and/or equivalent specialist recognition within six months.
  • Demonstrated current clinical practice in the respective clinical specialty of a high standard consistent with the role of a Post Graduate Fellow, with ability to adapt clinical practice in accordance with contemporary, evidence based best practice. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to undertake and complete the required Post Graduate Fellowship training program
  • Demonstrated technical expertise undertaking procedures appropriate to a Post Graduate Fellow’s training, skills, expertise and the available facilities including equipment, team, conditions and staffing

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). Additionally, Category A workers are required to receive a booster dose three months after completing the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations. New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate (IM011 immunisation medical exemption form) certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.  Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
