The purpose of the Urban Strategy Branch is to design and plan the future city to be thriving and resilient so all communities can flourish. Through understanding place and history, community needs and urban trends, the branch seeks to enable sustainable urban renewal and effectively manage city growth and change.
How this position makes the difference to City of Melbourne…Reporting to the Urban Strategy Manager,you will ensure design thinking and high quality place outcomes are prioritised in municipal visions (waterways, transport), masterplans (streets and precincts) and structure plans (neighbourhoods). You will work closely with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders at all levels to achieve Council’s objectives using your high level of consultation, negotiation and facilitation skills.
You will lead and manage the urban design team in providing design advice through structured, efficient and effective design review in the assessment of development applications as well as Council’s own public realm projects.
You will champion and deliver a wide range of projects and programs across the branch and have the ability to work under pressure with ease in a complex and political environment.
Tertiary qualified and with a track record of leading high performing teams, you are a collaborative and engaging leader with exceptional communication and influencing skills.
You can bring… (Selection criteria)
- A tertiary qualification in architecture, landscape architecture, planning, or a relevant profession
- A post graduate qualification in urban design and/ or extensive experience in urban design practice in private or public agency
- Demonstrated ability to lead, develop and motivate a multidisciplinary team
- Demonstrated ability to think and plan strategically, manage complex projects and tasks, and to implement projects on time and to budget and to a high quality standard
- Strong knowledge of planning practice (strategic and statutory) to ensure translation of design visions into policy or delivery of great outcomes for the city and people
- Demonstrated experience in working closely with communities in the development of future plans in areas undergoing change
- High level interpersonal, representational, consultation, persuasion and negotiation skills and the ability to work cooperatively with a wide range of organisations and individuals in government, the private sector and the community
- Ability to demonstrate and display City of Melbourne values – accountability, integrity, courage, respect for self and others, and striving for excellence.
Desirable
- Demonstrated personal networks in the Melbourne design and planning community and related public sector agencies, and demonstrated understanding of the development industry in central Melbourne
- Understanding of the drivers of development and the economics of cities.
