Data Scientist - Water Modelling Systems

We are NSW’s bulk water supplier, river operator and your one-stop shop for licensing, water trades and water information.  We supply two thirds of water used in NSW from our 42 dams, rivers and pipelines to regional towns, irrigators, Sydney Water and local water utilities.

WaterNSW is seeking an experienced Data Scientist to join the Water Modelling & Advice team. In this role you will develop and operationalise contemporary automated probabilistic hydro-climate modelling framework of extreme storms and their hydrologic impact on important declared dams including considerations for climate change, required to support Hydrologic Risk Assessments of rural NSW dams as a part of the broader Portfolio Risk Assessment Program of WaterNSW.  Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Design, develop and implement new operational contemporary modelling system components, tools and products required for regional supply and flood modelling services, especially those relevant to hydrologic risk assessments of all rural declared NSW dams
  • Collaborate and engage with multiple key stakeholders across WaterNSW & external research partners
  • Contribute to the articulation of WaterNSW positions on key technical matters and assists in their development and implementation
  • Update and maintain the existing models, modelling system components, tools and products used for wide ranging applications in regional NSW
  • Develop, test, integrate, and deploy database interactions and inputs using scripting languages (e.g. Python, R) and Azure Dev Ops
  • Ensure that policies, principles and practices in relation to all elements of WaterNSW are applied in the work area

Skills and Qualifications required:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications from an Australian educational institution in Hydrology, Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science, Computational Science or an equivalent/comparable overseas qualification
  • Substantial domain expertise and experience in a similar role involving computational science and software engineering applications
  • Ability to develop relationships with a wide range of stakeholders both internally and externally
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in designing, developing and operationalising modelling and forecasting systems and tools, preferably for scientific or engineering purposes
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of time series data sets for modelling, such as SCADA, HYDSTRA and real-time online data in water and environment sectors – favourable
  • Excellent writing and communications skills
  • Current NSW Drivers Licence
