About the organisation

The Supervising Scientist Branch is a specialist scientific agency within the Department of the Environment and Energy (Commonwealth). The Branch is responsible for protecting the environment of the Alligator Rivers Region, including Kakadu National Park, from the effects of uranium mining. In this context, the Branch conducts environmental research and monitoring around operating and remediated uranium mines. One aspect of the research is strongly focused on radioactivity in the environment to ensure the protection of human health and ecosystems.

 About the role

Working under broad direction, the Research Scientist develops and leads research projects relevant to the assessment of radiation impacts on people and the environment from uranium mining operations and site rehabilitation in the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory. Tasks include:

  • Develop and lead research projects;
  • Manage research project budgets and resources;
  • Undertake field- and laboratory-based work;
  • Evaluate complex radionuclide datasets;
  • Apply knowledge of international best practice radiation protection standards in assessment and decision-aiding;
  • Publish research reports and scientific papers;
  • Present research outcomes to stakeholders and the broader scientific community.
 

 Skills and experience

  • Extensive research experience relevant to radiation protection
  • Experience managing research projects, including budgets and resources
  • Experience evaluating complex radionuclide data and preparing papers
  • Knowledge of international best practice radiation protection standards
