Manager - Research Office 

 

The position is responsible for leading and managing the operational functions of the Research Office and providing coordinated and strategic support to the research and research training entities of the Institute; including the Graduate School, the Centre for Collaborative First Nations’ Research (CCFNR) and the Centre for Australian Languages and Linguistics (CALL). Working closely with the Executive Director, Higher Education and Research, the position will develop and implement systems and processes that promote high quality research management, monitoring and reporting - both for internal development and external reporting purposes.  The role interacts directly with centre managers, academics, policy and service provision staff, external stakeholders in government and research partner organisation representatives.  The position will provide executive support to the Institute Research Committee and will be the point of contact for the Institute’s membership to the Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS).


Detailed statement of duties

    1. Continuously and systematically review the Division’s research data and performance monitoring requirements and support implementation of systems and process improvements.
    2. Monitor national trends in research management and ensure Batchelor Institute is well placed to meet changing compliance requirements and take advantage of developing opportunities.
    3. Provide executive support to the Research Committee and participate in working parties related to the operations of the Research Office, Graduate School and Centres as required.
    4. Collect and collate data and prepare reports on institutional research performance for the Commonwealth Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC), Excellence for Research in Australia (ERA) and ABS Survey of Research and Experimental Development reporting.
    5. Support the development of Graduate School and Centre operational plans and preparation of progress reports against the Institute’s Strategic and Research plans.
    6. Maintain the Institute Research Repository, in collaboration with the Manager of Library and Information Services and the ICT Manager.
    7. Liaise with Centre and Graduate School Directors, project managers, other senior staff of the Division and the Institute web administrator to ensure currency of the Division’s webpages; including staff, adjunct, affiliate profiles, project activities and forms, policies and procedures.
    8. Establish and maintain professional and effective working relationships with other Divisions of the Institute as well as with funding agencies and other external partners and stakeholders.
    9. Monitor and maintain the Division’s corporate and Sharepoint files, contact lists, key dates, event schedules,  MOUs, press releases, newsletters and other relevant databases.
    10. Support the review, development and implementation of Institute policies and procedures related to the Institute’s research directions.
    11. Where appropriate, provide support for visits by key partners and officials, special events sponsored by the Institute and the development of media releases and web stories for Institute marketing.
    12. Other duties consistent with the position, including maintaining a national network of research office managers and supporting the development and submission of research and Divisional project funding bids.

Essential selection criteria

    1. Possess a minimum degree qualification and extensive relevant experience and expertise in management and administration, preferably within a higher education or research institution
    2. Possess advanced analytical and ICT skills in order to develop and maintain research data systems, extract and create data from numerous sources and support the research and research training reporting requirements of the Institute
    3. Demonstrated experience in providing executive support to committees; including scheduling and communicating meeting dates, preparing agendas, taking minutes, recording and following up actions and drafting correspondence
    4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within the social, cultural and political environments of Indigenous Australian communities and organisations
    5. Demonstrated high level of interpersonal and communications skills, including advanced written and oral capabilities.
    6. Proven success as an organised, multi-skilled and analytical professional who works systematically and effectively to support the strategic objectives of the organisation.
    7. Possess a sound knowledge of current issues and directions in research management, research training and compliance reporting
