Job description:

We are currently seeking a Human Factors Advisor for work on our Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP), in the South Eastern Program Alliance (SEPA). 

This large-scale project will benefit train users, pedestrians, cyclists and drivers by improving safety, reducing congestion and enabling more frequent train services.

About the role: 

In this role you will be responsible for providing a coordination and advisory role in the development and delivery of human factors integration activities for level crossing removal projects through the complete project development and delivery lifecycle.

This is a full time permanent role primarily based in Richmond. You may also be required to travel to site project offices in Melbourne’s CBD and along Melbourne’s South-East where required. Although dedicated to SEPA, this role also joins a wider industry community of human factors professionals at Metro and across the level crossing removal program.  As a Metro employee you will receive free public transport travel.

The Human Factors Advisor collaborates with the level crossing removal design team, Metro and other stakeholders to integrate end user human factors considerations in the design of rail systems and facilities, stations, car parks, and landscaped public spaces.  For both the temporary construction phase, and for the final delivered facilities, your role will identify and evaluate the human factors risks and issues for end user groups that include Metro’s  train drivers, operations and maintenance staff, passengers and other general public user groups.

You will liaise with end user representatives and engineering and operational subject matter experts and ensure appropriate human factors analysis is undertaken as required to support the project team to develop project solutions that mitigate safety risk arising from human factors and deliver optimal outcomes for end users. 

This role is integral to managing compliance with the human factors requirements under Metro’s Safety Management System and Rail Safety National Law. 

Accountabilities:

  • Provide assurance of human factors integration (HFI) and HFI deliverables at Project level in accordance with Metro’s HFI procedure and Management of Change process, on behalf of Metro in support of the SEPA team.
  • Set requirements for HFI into nominated projects and monitor compliance.
  • Provide technical advice to nominated projects on HFI and the application of HF principles.
  • Undertake consultation and liaison with end users/SME’s, designers and other Projects personnel as required.
  • Undertaken Early HF Analysis and develop and maintain Project-specific HFI plans that outline the approach for HFI for each nominated project.
  • Provide input to Project risk workshops to identify HF issues and assess them against Metro’s Enterprise Risk Management Procedure, including workshops facilitating Preliminary Hazard Analyses (PHA) and Safety in Design (SiD) reviews.
  • Direct and conduct HF analysis at Project level, including task analysis, assessment of training needs, procedure development and human error analysis.
  • Conduct, review and verify HF reports / assessments, including those that identiy  safety concerns. 
  • Capture and manage HF risks derived from Projects to establish lessons learned, identify commonalities and maintain continuous improvement for the Business.
  • Undertake HF awareness-raising activities with internal and external Project teams and stakeholders as needed to support early and effective HFI.

Desired qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Tertiary qualification in a HF -oriented discipline (e.g. Human Factors, Egonomics, Behavioural Science)
  • Membership of a professional safety institution or relevant recognised body is desirable
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in HF application within a safety-related environment. 
  • Experience of HF integration into projects is preferred 
  • Excellent verbal and written skills with all levels of management and staff (verbal and written)
  • Ability to follow occupational health, safety and environmental procedures in the rail industry
  • Ability to identify and analyse risks, and make corrective actions
  • Ability to manage, use and maintain administrative systems
  • Ability to educate, negotiate, persuade and influence opinions
  • Effective time management skills ensuring deadlines are strictly adhered to
