The Department

An exciting opportunity is available for Psychiatric trained Registered Nurses.

Alfred Mental and Addiction Health (AMAH) is responsible for the operation of services which focus on people with a severe mental illness residing in the Inner South Eastern area of Melbourne.

The Alfred Emergency and Trauma Centre (E&TC) will see all emergencies for assessment and stabilisation. The department is a purpose built modern facility managing in excess of 75,000 patients per annum. It has 82 treatment spaces and is arbitrarily divided into 5 main clinical areas, including a 4 bed dedicated Mental Health & AOD Hub (The West Wing). It provides emergency and psychiatric services to the local community, as well as some Victorian state-wide services.

Mental Health services are provided by a number of CL & Emergency Psychiatry teams located at the Alfred Hospital (Commercial Road, Prahran) as well as a 54 bed in-patient unit. The community teams are based at St. Kilda Road Clinic,  Alma Road CCU in St. Kilda, PARC in South Yarra and the Child & Adolescent Service located in Moorabbin, as well as several satellite Headspace centres.  Aged Psychiatry is located at Caulfield campus of Alfred Health.

AMAH also works in partnership with relevant local non-government and social support agencies.

Role

The RPN2 will demonstrate core values of nursing at Alfred Health through appropriate and evidenced based clinical practice and care of patients and their family.  The position is based primarily in the West Wing within E&TC but is not limited to this space. The role requires a minimum of 2 years post graduate experience and demonstrated skills in risk assessment, mental state assessment, care planning with knowledge of acute psychiatry and community care options. This position is established within the integrated Emergency Psychiatry team, one arm of the Consultation Liaison & Emergency Psychiatry Program which is included in the Hospital and Emergency Services department along with the Acute In-patient Units.

Skills Required

  • Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia via AHPRA
  • Tertiary qualifications in mental health nursing- post graduate diploma equivalent or working towards same
  • Minimum 2 years post graduate experience
  • Be familiar with and adhere to relevant professional codes of ethics, the values of Alfred Health, and relevant legslation, in particular the Mental Health and Wellbeing Act (2022) and the Guardianship and Administration Act (2019)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Professional manner
  • Hold an appropriate visa with working rights
