What you'll be doing

The incumbent must possess a high level of leadership and management skills and be able to demonstrate superior communication and interpersonal skills at all levels. The role requires a significant level of negotiation between various staff and will be required at times to participate in difficult conversations to meet the objectives of the role. The position will also require capacity to review and analyse data relating to service outcomes and develop strategies in conjunction with other members of the health care team to improve performance of the service and individuals as required.

As this role is responsible for the management of perioperative services, it will be essential to have significant previous clinical experience within this specialty in leadership roles. 

As the Nurse Manager of this Service, the purpose is to:

  • Lead, direct and coordinate patient care across the service.
  • Ensure the practice of nursing/midwifery is safe and efficient, while maintaining standards of care.
  • Manage the business/management processes of the service and report on these on a regular basis to other key stakeholders in a variety of forums.
  • Ensure systems are in place to monitor the efficiency of the service and work with key staff to identify and implement improvement opportunities as required.
  • Monitor service outcomes to ensure that the needs of patients and other consumers are being met.
  • Ensure services are being provided within a framework that confirms all clinical Standards are being met and that all legislative requirements are being addressed at all times.
  • Monitor outcomes and lead investigations into system and process issues as they arise with a goal to develop action plans to improve service provision.
  • Monitor adherence to all State, District and Local Policies and Procedures.
  • Work with other members of the Perioperative Services Leadership Team to ensure that management processes are consistent and that all staff perform their roles in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Ensure the service is working in accordance with annual targets and objectives and work with the Operations Manager and team to take corrective action as required.
  • Ensure the service works within a Quality Management Framework and that strategies relevant to compliance with the National Standards for Safety and Quality in Healthcare and the ACORN Standards are fully implemented and regularly monitored.
  • Ensure there is an annual education plan for all departments and that this is being delivered regularly to meet the needs of staff and patients.
  • Model the CORE Values of the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Registered Nurse with a current licence to practice from the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  2. Relevant tertiary qualifications or working towards the same; or alternatively relevant work experience or combination of qualification and work experience.
  3. Demonstrated experience in the relevant specialty of the ward/unit.
  4. Demonstrated skills in leadership and management within the healthcare setting.
  5. Demonstrated ability to evaluate clinical services and manage change.
  6. Proven ability to create and maintain a positive workplace culture.
  7. Superior communication and interpersonal skills and proven negotiation skills within health.
