The Adolescent Medicine department at The Children's Hospital at Westmead has up a temporary Staff Specialist position available for a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and Addiction Psychiatry position available. This is a temporary position with an ASAP commencement through to 30 June 2026.

What you'll be doing
This position is required to provide Child and Adolescent Psychiatry specialist service to the Department Psychological Medicine SCHN - The Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW) and Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick (SCH).

The position of Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist will ensure that;
  • Clinical Services are focused on delivering excellent clinical care to children and supporting their families.
  • Research and teaching is undertaken and focused on the area of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
The Department of Psychological Medicine has a number of clinical teams, as well as providing clinical consultation to other services within The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network. The successful candidate for this position will provide psychiatric consultation for children, young people and families referred to the Care and Intervention for Children and Adolescents affected by Drugs and Alcohol (CICADA) service across SCHN, a service run by the Department of Adolescent Medicine. CICADA Service provides multidisciplinary comprehensive diagnostic assessment and management for high risk vulnerable children and adolescents with FASD, substance use within the family or of the Adolescent.

The Psychiatrist may also be required to work in any of the psychological medicine teams, according to service needs as determined by the Head of Department. The Psychological Medicine clinical teams are:
  • Intellectual Disability/Developmental Disability Mental Health Team
  • Acute Inpatient Psychiatric Unit
  • Consultation-Liaison Team
  • Psychosomatic Disorders and Gender Dysphoria Team
  • Eating Disorders Team
Clinical responsibilities for the Psychiatrist within the Department of Psychological Medicine include providing direct patient care, supervising the care provided by junior medical staff, and providing child psychiatric consultation to non-medical team members.

Provide contemporary comprehensive specialist services for optimal patient outcomes.

Provide support training to clinicians across multiple disciplines to achieve quality education and safe clinical practice.
  1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist Psychiatrist and/or overseas trained specialist pathways.
  2. Demonstrated clinical experience in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry and/or Mental Health and Drug and Alcohol Co-Morbidity.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership of a team.
  4. Demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to teaching, continuing education, research and quality improvement.
  6. Availability to participate in an on-call roster and to respond on site within a reasonable time.

In addition, all Category A workers and new recruits are required to receive one dose of the seasonal influenza vaccine annually to be considered compliant.

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate.

The preferred applicant may be considered for the award of a conjoint academic title (levels A to D) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney at a level commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience.  The award of the academic title will also confer membership upon the appointee of the University Department of Paediatrics and Child Health.  The academic title will be held for the duration of The Children's Hospital at Westmead appointment.  No remuneration is attached to the University appointment.  The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to The Children's Hospital at Westmead for clinical matters.
