The Children's Hospital at Westmead has both Permanent & Temporary Staff Specialist vacancies within the General Medicine department. The vacant FTE as per below:
  • Up to 0.4FTE Permanent Staff Specialist
  • Up to 0.25FTE Temporary Staff Specialist

Both roles are expected to work in the General Medicine department which includes General Medical Teams, Chronic and Complex Care and The Children's Short Stay Unit and will involve participation in across both CSSU and Team on-call rosters, and contributing to outpatient/ambulatory clinical and models of care as required depending on the needs of the department. 

What you'll be doing
General Medicine at The Children's Hospital at Westmead is a dynamic and growing department providing excellent care to children and their families with general medical problems including those who require more complex chronic and tertiary paediatric care. The busy clinical department is involved in provision of care via inpatient and outpatient ambulatory care models as part of interdisciplinary team care.

The General Medicine team provides excellent clinical services and works closely with nursing, and allied health staff along with specialty teams and is involved in education and teaching and quality improvement activities. The Staff Specialist (SS) will provide comprehensive quality evidence-based specialist services and support training of clinicians across multiple disciplines to achieve quality education and safe clinical practice. The SS is responsible for provision of high quality safe care to children and their families, as part of a multidisciplinary team. The SS will participate in review and improvement activities along with training and education of staff. Staff Specialist's must abide by the hospital code of conduct and participate in annual performance reviews and complete mandatory training.

Selection Criteria

  1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist General Paediatrics, and/or overseas trained specialist pathways.
  2. Demonstrated recent clinical experience in General Paediatrics at the role delineation of the service including short stay, inpatient and ambulatory outpatient models or care.
  3. Proven recent clinical expertise in the management of children with tertiary general medical concerns including chronic and complex conditions.
  4. Proven ability to embrace new models of care, manage change and promote a culture of continuous quality improvement.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team and provide leadership of a team.
  6. Demonstrated effective clinical communication through use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  7. Proven commitment to contributing to departmental activities, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and across all disciplines, continuing education, and research.
  8. Availability to participate in an on-call roster and to respond on site within a reasonable time.

In addition, all Category A workers and new recruits are required to receive one dose of the seasonal influenza vaccine annually to be considered compliant. 

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate.

The preferred applicant may be considered for the award of a conjoint academic title (levels A to D) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney at a level commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience.  The award of the academic title will also confer membership upon the appointee of the University Department of Paediatrics and Child Health.  The academic title will be held for the duration of The Children's Hospital at Westmead appointment.  No remuneration is attached to the University appointment.  The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to The Children's Hospital at Westmead for clinical matters.
