About the business

Broken Hill is the centre of the Far West New South Wales outback and is 500km north east of Adelaide and 1,100 km west of Sydney. There are daily flights to major cities.

The Broken Hospital has 100 beds that services a wide area with a population of 25,000 people. It is a rural teaching hospital, providing acute, non-acute and outpatient services, including dialysis and chemotherapy. It has an emergency department, general medical, surgical, obstetrics & gynaecology, paediatric, mental health and sub-acute beds. Work is underway to enhance the level of ICU and CCU. Support services include Pathology, Medical Imaging (CT Scan), as well as a wide range of Allied and Primary Health services.

About the role

Responsibilities of this role includes providing professional specialist anaesthetics care to acute and elective surgery public and private patients, after-hour on-call, education of junior staff and some administrative duties.  There is potential for an academic appointment.

Skills and experience

1. Unconditional Specialist Registration with the Medical Board of Australia and the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency.

2. Fellowship of the Australian & New Zealand College of Anaesthetists or other specialist recognition as provided for in the Staff Specialist (State) Award or other specialist recognition as provided for under the Health Insurance Act 1973.

3. Demonstrated technical and professional competence in the specialty, including recent hospital experience within the specialty.

4. Demonstrated participation in and commitment to quality improvement and accreditation activities relevant to the specialty

5. Demonstrated commitment to and participation in teaching of other health professionals, including staff and doctors in training.

6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team.

7. Demonstrated commitment to continuing medical education relevant to rural specialist practice
