Group Leader - Major Hazards

About the role

WorkSafe Victoria are on the hunt for a dynamic leader to join the Major Hazards team as part of the wider Major Hazards & Dangerous Goods division in the Health & Safety Business Unit.

The Group Leader delivers business outcomes through the leadership of a field-based inspector team and engagement with other WorkSafe teams and external duty holders.

The purpose of the role is to manage a team of Inspectors in the conduct of planned oversight, response, annual inspections and verification activity at Major Hazard Facilities.

Key Accountabilities

  • Resource Management: You will provide leadership and guidance to the field team, by planning, coordinating and providing specialist resources to achieve targeted strategic/statutory or response interventions in line with the business plan
  • Coaching and development: You will coach team members as part of the performance development process by providing support to inspectors through coaching and undertaking inspections with inspectors, identifying opportunities and building strategies to assist Inspectors to overcome difficult issues.
  • Monitoring and assessing compliance: You will access and monitor compliance with obligations in the workplace, in accordance with the Act and WorkSafe policy and procedure and address shortfalls where appropriate.
  • Managing disputes in accordance with statutory requirements: You will assist in the resolution of disputes in the workplace through the provision of advice and management of stakeholder interactions.
  • Lead change and project activities: You will positively participate in the Leadership Team. You’ll lead the implementation of changes and projects by allocating team resources and report in accordance with project objectives. You will undertake information gathering, local research and analysis to input into strategy development or targeting.

About you

You have substantial experience in leading and managing a team including managing performance planning, strong capability to motivate and develop employees as well as the ability to liaise in a professional manner with a diverse internal and external client/stakeholder group in a variety of situations, using a range of influencing, negotiation and conflict resolution approaches. Additionally you will possess:

  • Ability to influence and encourage positive behaviour within the workplace, and coach and develop team members and to share knowledge and experience with others to facilitate on job learning.
  • Ability to plan, organise and prioritise work and resources within organisational constraints.
  • Experience in the incident investigation and root cause analysis for Serious and Significant incidents.
  • Sound knowledge of the OHS and DG obligations as detailed under the relevant Acts in Victoria.
  • Ability to understand compliance and enforcement policy and quality assurance processes.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications in OH&S/ Workers Compensation will be viewed favourably.
  • Diploma of Government – Workplace Inspection (desirable)
  • An appointed Inspector (OHS Act 2004, DG Act 1985) (desirable)
  • Qualifications in relevant technical discipline e.g. science/engineering and/or experience in high hazard industries will be viewed favourably
