Principal Advisor Rail Safety 

Founded in 1865, with approximately 5,800 staff, more than $6 billion in fixed and other assets and more than 6,500 kilometres of track Queensland Rail is dedicated to increasing rail patronage through improved reliability, frequency of services and making rail travel the transport mode of choice in Queensland.

We are looking for an outstanding leader with a high level of technical ability in Rail Safety who will lead and influence continuous improvement for Network.

Key responsibilities for this role are (but not limited to):

  • Participate as a member of the Safety (Network) management team to provide advice on rail safety issues in a dynamic and changing integrated passenger and rail infrastructure environment through effective day-to-day strategy formulation, customer, business partner and stakeholder engagement, financial and commercial excellence and people leadership.

  • Lead and manage the Rail Safety (Network) team in providing advice and support regarding safety issues to the Network group in order to ensure a safe environment for employees and customers and to protect property in and around the rail network.

  • Lead and manage the Rail Safety (Network) team in implementing and maintaining enterprise-wide rail safety frameworks, policies and standards across the Network group.

  • Lead and manage the Rail Safety (Network) team in developing and delivering training and development programs to develop and educate network employees to improve individual safety and the group's safety performance.

  • Liaise with key stakeholders within the central Safety function in order to obtain advice and guidance relating to specialist rail safety initiatives and activities to provide the best possible rail safety advice and support to the Network & ABS business.

  • Contribute to the enterprise-wide Rail Safety strategy and policy formulation, implementation and maintenance

  • Lead and manage the Rail Safety team developing safety processes and work instructions aligned to both enterprise-wide standards and the specific needs of the Network function.

  • Lead and manage the Rail Safety team in investigating and reporting on risk and compliance-related matters.

  • Achieve the Queensland Rail, Rail Safety (Network) business targets, objectives, performance measures, safety responsibilities and continually seeking to implement business performance improvement initiatives.

  • Work proactively with all sections of the Network Safety Team in the development, implementation and ongoing improvement strategies, plans, programs and initiatives that result in effective risk management across the entire Network operations.

  • The determination to succeed as part of the greater Queensland Rail Safety team

Key Selection Criteria:

  • High level of skill in the translation of enterprise-wide rail safety frameworks and policies into practices that are easy to interpret and apply.

  • High level of skill in the management of a rail safety function.

  • Extensive knowledge of contemporary rail safety standards in a complex and dynamic organisation.

  • Well developed leadership capability in a large and complex organisation, focused on building a customer focused, performance-based culture.

  • High level of influencing, interpersonal, consultation, relationship building and negotiation skills that build and sustain productive relationships and partnerships.

  • Substantial knowledge understanding of heavy industry risk management standards, procedures and practices.

  • Substantial understanding of organisational cultural maturity attainment concepts and journey models.

Base salary $109,700 plus Superannuation
