An emergency situation has been declared amid serious bushfire threats in the NT.

A total fire ban has been declared in response to extreme conditions forecast in the Darwin and Adelaide River forecast zones, with severe conditions stretching as far south as Katherine.

Bureau of Meteorology NT manager Todd Smith says dangerous conditions have been fuelled by “exceptionally dry air”, high inland temperatures and a high pressure system to the south.

The fire danger forecast could reach catastrophic levels in exposed areas between Batchelor and Adelaide River this week.

“This sort of weather set-up is something that we will probably only see once every five years,” he said.

“I just really urge residents, particularly those out in the rural areas, to really take this seriously.”

The emergency situation declaration means authorised officers can issue directions to property owners and evacuate residents by force if necessary.

An extra waterbombing helicopter has been sent from South Australia to assist.

The NT Health Department has warned that smoke from the fires is affecting air quality and could pose a risk to people with respiratory conditions.
