The Tasmanian State Tax review Panel has announced its decision to discontinue its formal taxation review process due to the ‘limited ability to reform State taxation in the current economic environment.’

The proposal to discontinue the Review at this point was initiated by the Treasurer, Lara Giddings, and Shadow Treasurer Peter Gutwein who were both concerned about spending more taxpayers money on a process, the outcomes of which had little prospect of implementation due to the difficult economic and budget circumstances faced by the State.

The decision was supported by all panel members, with the State Greens agreeing to discontinue the reform process.

Panel members acknowledged that many of the submissions received involved broadening the tax base in order to reduce tax rates or remove less efficient forms of taxation.
